How does a Motion Activated Security Camera Work and What are the benefits

There are two ways motion can be positively identified. There is detection by movement, and also by sound.  Infrared light or laser technology may be used for optical detection. Motion detection devices, such as motion activated security cameras, have sensors that detect movement and send a signal to  switch on a camera connected to a computer which stores and manages captured images to be viewed later or viewed over a computer network.

A Motion Activated Security Camera has a number of benefits that regular security cameras cannot match.

A typical outdoor security camera is running all the time, most if not all of which is filming nothing. A motion camera only starts to record when a motion is detected.

Benefit: Saves money, saves disc space, saves battery life, makes reviewing recording a whole lot easier as you only have to watch when there is movement.

Benefit: A visible camera will turn towards the person moving, so if the presence of the camera hasn’t scared them off, then the movement of the camera plus an LED light will cause most infruders to leave.

Different Types of Motion Activated Security Cameras

The wireless motion activated camera has the major advantage that it can be moved around depending on the part of your property you feel is the most vulnerable. battery life is a key issue here, plus the fact it needs to be placed where an intruder cannot get his hands on it and remove the batter type of wireless camera

A Covert motion activated camera has the advantage of not being visible, but this reduces its deterrent value. However the presence of the LED light, and the noise of the motor as the camera moves toward the intruder dramatically increases the dterrent value, and also means they are caught on camera. Again if battery driven it must be out of reach of the potential intruder.

Night Vision Motion Activated Camera: Obviously many intruders come at night, and can be picked up by infra red detection. The quality of video can be poor, so it is worth thinking about a motion activated camera and dual floodlights, as a deterrent and a clearer picture of the villain at the same time. Of course such cameras also work in daylight hours, and can be wireless as well.

Dome Motion Activated Camera The principles are no different, but GOOGLE ADSENSE a dome security camera, has 360 degree vision if placed on high such as a lamppost. This means it can effectively see round corners, and would be almost impossible to interfere with.

As a final point, the positioning of any type of outdoor security camera must magnify its deterrent properties. It needs to make a statement that this property is too risky to enter. If all you have is a grainy picture and a robbery, then the camera has not done its job.

It may be worth while thinking about the much cheaper deterrent option which is the dummy security camera. Very realistic, will follow movement, blink appropriately, and fool most intruders. Certainly two or three dummy security cameras and one idential outdoor security camera might well be totally effective
